We offer a variety of ministries to the community. Some people participate to learn, while others participate to teach and serve. The joy people get from participating in these ministries makes the effort that people put into them that much more rewarding.

Members of our congregation are not required to participate in any of these, but we do hope you’ll find something that resonates with your passions, interests and strengths. Please feel free to inquire about any of these or if there is a particular interest you may have that you do not see here.

Our bi-monthly newsletter, The Messenger, provides an update on our ministries and provides information on coming events.

TRADITIONAL WORSHIP These services are typically one hour long and structured in the traditional way. Our music consists of traditional Methodist hymns from the United Methodist Hymnal with a few gospel and contemporary songs mixed in sung by our choir and played on either our grand piano or our church organ.

CONTEMPORARY WORSHIP It comes from Psalms 100:1-2 (New American Standard Version) “Shout joyfully to the LORD, all the earth. Serve the LORD with gladness; Come before Him with joyful singing.” The blueprint for worship – shout, serve and sing. He asks just three simple things of us to have complete communion with Him.

MISSIONS At Glen Burnie UMC, we strive to fulfill the directive in Acts 1:8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (New International Version) To this end, we focus on several local projects, but also concern ourselves with needs in other parts of the United States and abroad.

Local

  • Feed My People offerings of food and money are collected monthly for NCEON, the local food bank, and some is set aside for our church food pantry (given away to drop ins). Each month focuses on a specific food item needed.
  • CROP Walk – another event that focuses in part on supporting NCEON (25% of the proceeds), with the majority of the money going to CWS (Church World Service) to help relieve hunger all over the world. Each fall, individuals gather sponsors and then walk the B & A trail together.  The CROP Walk begins here at Glen Burnie UMC and ends with food and fellowship.
  • Richard Henry Lee Elementary – Glen Burnie UMC has partnered with this local elementary school. Besides helping to spruce up the grounds, we put together backpacks for needy children and are working to supply tutors.
  • Monthly lunch give-away – On the 3rd Sunday of each month, lunches are prepared and handed out on Crain Highway, beginning around 11:00am, to anyone in need.
  • Homeless Winter Relief – Each winter Glen Burnie UMC provides one week of housing for approximately 30 homeless men. (Other churches also work with this program, so the homeless are warm and well-fed all winter long.) Various groups within the church prepare dinner each night, while others bag lunches, prepare breakfasts or supervise at night.
  • Thanksgiving Baskets are prepared for needy families within the church and in the surrounding community.
  • Christmas Giving Tree – winter weather wear is collected and given away.

National

  • Disaster Relief Team – In October, a team travels to a hard-hit area to meet up with many others also working to help. The Volunteers in Mission teams have gone to: the gulf area, the Carolinas, NJ, and KY.  LHUMC and Friends are planning a Christian ‘disaster rebuilding’ trip responding to damage from flooding in North Carolina.  The trip is scheduled for October 13 – 20, 2018 in Tarboro, NC—about 60 miles south of the VA state line.
  • Health Kits, most recently sent to needy people in Baltimore.
  • Summer work mission for the youth, this year to Camp Joy in Western Maryland.
  • Blanket Sunday – monetary donations and occasionally blankets are collected and given to Church World Service.

International

  • Glen Burnie UMC supports Priscilla Jaiah, a missionary to Liberia, Africa.
  • The Missions Committee would like to make a foreign missions trip. More information will be available when plans are made.

CHURCH & SOCIETY The Church & Society Commission helps our congregation respond to some of the pressing social issues of our community.  Areas of activity include a food pantry and after-funeral luncheons for bereaved families, promotion of recycling and composting so we can be good stewards of our planet and its environment, keeping abreast of legislative issues of particular concern to our church family, urging voter registration, and providing our congregation with information on county services especially for senior citizens.  Glen Burnie United Methodist Church has a reputation as the center for Social Action in Anne Arundel County and for this we are very proud.  We are always looking for motivated proactive individuals who would like to join us and make a difference in the societal matters of our community and state.

Children’s Ministries are for children ages 3 & up. We offer a variety of programs from Sunday school to youth choir.  Vacation Bible School, Shipwrecked, is scheduled for August 13 – 17, 2018 from 9:00 am to noon.

Youth Ministries The Glen Burnie Youth Group is a Christian based fellowship of 6th to 12th graders. We meet in the church fellowship hall on Sundays, September through June from 6pm to 8pm.  During the summer months we plan trips and fun events – all youth are invited to join!

Senior Groups Glen Burnie offers many opportunities for seniors to fellowship and grow in their faith! We have very active Methodist MenMethodist Women’sand Young at Heart groups.

The “We Care” Ministry of Glen Burnie United Methodist Church is comprised of a group of men and women of the Church who respond to the needs of our Church members who are grieving over the loss of a loved one by providing food and fellowship in the social hall after funeral or memorial services.  For more information, contact the church office.

Music Ministries Music is a very important part of worship at Glen Burnie. We have music ministries in many different focus areas from a praise band, to handbells, to a traditional church choir.
